Have your pretty flowers and eat them, too!

Summer fun with edible flowers
So my new favourite thing is edible flowers. Why is this not more popular? They make everything look amazing! I found some of this stuff ages ago, but it was winter so I thought I'd save it for now, and after the (excruciatingly hot) weather we've been having in Durban, they came to mind again so here they are for you to try out!

Flower popsicles are such a rad idea! The three pics below have a recipe/how-to to go with them, click pics for sources.

Check out these guides to edible flowers herehere and here for more info on which flowers to use and how.
How cool is this seed bomb kit? I want one of these, I'd be seed-bombing all over the place.

I haven't tried any edible flower stuff yet myself, but I plan to do so soon. If you try it out do let me know how it goes and send pics!

Happy Holidays! And some cake bunting!

Happy Holidays from Happiness is...

Yes, I'm still around! If you follow me on twitter, you'll have seen my rants about no internet and bad service, etc - I've had dead phone lines and no internet for two weeks, so that's why posts have been scarce. Thank goodness it's back today, so I had to do this post, even though I'm so tired I'm pretty much seeing double, haha!

Ok so, most people are going on holiday soon, so I just wanted to say happy holidays! Even if you aren't going away or doing anything much, it's still great to have a few days to kick back and chill. Enjoy it! I plan on spending mine doing some crafting that I've had on my list for ages. If I do get round to it and they turn out ok, I'll share them with you here :)

In other news, I've been making some cake bunting! It's a fun addition to any cake and immediately turns it into a party vibe. If you'd like some, you can drop me a mail at happiness.is.info(at)gmail.com and let me know what you'd like, and I'll custom make them for you :)
What do you think of these?

JuMeLi and the best lemon meringue pie in Durban

Jumeli, an awesome restaurant and coffee shop in Glenwood, Durban.

This is another cool little restaurant for Durbanites! JuMeLi is a lovely little place on the corner of Bulwer and Clark Road in Glenwood. They have a really nice selection of cakes and sweet stuff as well as breakfasts and lunches, with a separate vegetarian section on the menu which was nice to see - I hate having to scour menus to pick out the vegetarian options. The interesting name comes from a combination of the names of the owner's three kids. They also have free wi-fi - awesome!

I'm a big fan of lemon meringue pie, and I can honestly say their's is one of the best I've ever tasted! Just thinking about it and looking at the pics are making me crave more. I definitely have to try their brownies on my next visit - they looked wicked.

Their outside seating area is a really fresh and comfortable space, while the interior is cosy and creatively decorated with an eclectic selection of artwork from various artists which is changed regularly.

My New Favourite Band - The Trees!

Just popping in from a mad busy week to share my new favourite band with you guys - The Trees! They are so freakin awesome, saw them live the other day and was completely sold in the first ten seconds. Fantastic violin and banjo work going on in there. Unfortunately they don't seem to have any recorded stuff yet, but take a listen to this...

What's more awesome is they're Durban locals. Will post some pics when I get a gap!

Awesome Intricate Sculptural Collages

Alexander Korzer-Robinson makes amazing sculptural collages from Antiquarian Books.

Alexander Korzer-Robinson makes amazing sculptural collages from Antiquarian Books. I'd never be able to take a knife or scissors to these vintage treasures, but what he's created from them is truly beautiful. He basically removes all text and space, leaving only the existing images in the book to create these deep, intricate sculptures.

Pop-up Happiness - The Joy of Eating Together

I'm not a fan of Coca-Cola, but I love their latest initiative: famous chef Simone Rugiati is on a mission asking people to eat together, so a Happiness Truck sets up a pop-up restaurant in a street in Naples, Italy, to get people to eat together. An altogether feel-good little video, and of course the quirks and details of the beautiful Italian background make it all the better to look at.

Vaguely related: have you noticed the "let's do coffee" page in the menu at the top of this blog? Clicky click ;)

Delicious Ci Gusta comes to Durban!

Italian restaurant franchise, Ci Gusta (not to be confused with me gusta which is what immediately came to mind when I heard the name) has landed in Durban! It's the first store in Africa and the first self service version outside of the US, and you can find it on Florida Road in the old Deluxe/Thunder Road building on the corner. Their products include sweet and savoury, but their main products seem to be their Italian gelato and frozen yoghurt. The flavours are fantastic and suuper delicious! You can also add toppings. The website says they have free wifi and a kids play area, although I didn't see the play area when I visited.
The staff behind the counter are super friendly and helpful and will give you a taste of all the flavours you want to try if it's your first time. The tough part is trying to make a flavour choice after that! I went with the Black Chocolate, which is a decadent intense cocoa flavour that's nice and creamy but not too rich, and the Pink Grapefruit that tasted like sherbet! It was soooo delish! Next time I think I'll stick to one flavour though - they're each so good that I think it's better to enjoy them individually.

According to their site they also do ice cream sandwiches, smoothies, soups and coffee, but I didn't see any of that at the store yet.
